Visual Traditions: Celebrating local emerging
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists
coincides with NAIDOC Week 2020. This
year’s theme, Always Was, Always Will
Be, serves to remind all Australians of the
important legacy carried by Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander people. The theme
recognises that First Nations people have
occupied and cared for this continent for
more than 65,000 years.
As the world’s oldest continuing culture,
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
were the first to establish visual expression
and traditions. The first artists. Thriving
from this rich cultural history, contemporary
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists
continue to tell their stories, explores
histories and engage in laying down future
visual traditions.
